Description
Debuting in 1963, the Gibson Thunderbird Bass arrived as an instrument unlike anything the world had witnessed before. Crafted by automotive coach designer Ray Dietrich, who was also the visionary behind the Gibson Firebird, the bass showcased a radical, asymmetrical, and curvaceous body style that was groundbreaking at its launch and remains contemporary and fresh today. These original instruments utilized a 9-ply neck-through-body architecture paired with mahogany “wings,” marking the very first instance of Gibson utilizing neck-through construction for its bass line.
The Thunderbird eventually underwent a transformation, adopting a Non-Reverse body silhouette alongside a set-neck, glued-in design. Notably, it was the first Gibson bass to implement a 34” long-scale neck, a departure from the 30.5” scale used on earlier models. Gibson is now pleased to reintroduce the legendary Thunderbird to our current collection. This latest iteration features the classic reverse body shape carved from solid mahogany, maintaining the aesthetic of the original neck-through models by including a raised center section.
This modern Thunderbird is updated with a glued-in, set mahogany neck shaped with a fast, accessible SlimTaper profile for improved comfort. The headstock now features the widely favoured Non-Reverse style, ensuring that tuning remains intuitive and fast. Further modern refinements include the addition of Hipshot Ultralite Mini Clover tuning machines, which enhance balance and provide precise tuning, as well as a Hipshot Supertone bridge that offers adjustable action height and full intonation.
Drawing inspiration from the legendary bird-like spirit found in the culture of North American indigenous peoples, the Thunderbird Bass delivers a powerful sound courtesy of its two EB Bass humbucker pickups, which provide substantial output and a punchy low end. You can manage the output of each pickup with its own dedicated volume control, letting you isolate either one or blend them to your specific preference, while a master tone control provides further sonic shaping. The instrument is finished with a 3-ply white pickguard that bears the signature Thunderbird logo.
Each Thunderbird Bass is shipped in a Gibson hardshell case to ensure it stays protected while you travel. Purchase your own Thunderbird Bass now and take command of the low end with thunderous style.
