The Gibson Custom L-1 Anniversary Limited Edition, finished in a striking Cremona Burst, serves as an exclusive 100th-anniversary release limited to only 100 instruments. This model features mahogany back and sides, a thermally aged red spruce top, and a mahogany neck shaped to a Historic V-profile that joins the body at the 12th fret.

This instrument marks a century since the debut of Gibson’s flat-top acoustic line. Back in 1926, the introduction of the Gibson L-0 and L-1 models established the blueprint for every Gibson flat-top that followed. To honor this centennial milestone and the legacy of these pioneering acoustic designs, the Gibson Custom Shop is proud to present the L-1 Anniversary Limited Edition as a devoted tribute to those foundational instruments.

Although this guitar has been utilized by a vast array of artists—including Norman Blake, Hubert Sumlin, Scrapper Blackwell, Keith Richards, and Jeff Buckley—it remains most famously linked to the blues icon Robert Johnson, who appears with a sunburst 12-fret L-1 in one of his few verified photographs. With its compact body, 12-fret neck, and signature tonal warmth, the L-1 is perfectly suited for blues music. While it delivers impressive results when used with a flatpick, it also excels as an exceptional choice for fingerstyle performance.

Handcrafted at the Gibson Custom Shop in Bozeman, Montana, this model utilizes the classic L-1 body shape constructed from solid mahogany back and sides, paired with a thermally aged red spruce top featuring scalloped x-bracing. The aesthetic is defined by extensive cream binding, which accents the top, back, the perimeter of the headstock, the edges of the ebony fretboard, and even the rim of the sound hole. The 25-inch scale mahogany neck features a Historic V profile and an ebony fretboard holding 19 standard frets with mother-of-pearl dot inlays. While modern Gibson acoustics typically utilize a 14-fret neck for greater accessibility, the company’s original designs from 90 to 100 years ago utilized a 12-fret join. These early instruments are highly prized by collectors, not just for their rarity, but specifically for their sound. Though the original 1926–1937 production run offered both 12 and 14-fret variations, this anniversary model specifically employs a 12-fret design to capture those superior sonic qualities.

The headstock of the L-1 Anniversary Limited Edition is outfitted with three-on-a-plate open-back tuners featuring cream buttons, a bone nut, a mother-of-pearl "The Gibson" logo, and a two-ply black and white truss rod cover engraved with the word “Anniversary” in white. Furthermore, the rectangular, closed-slot ebony bridge is highlighted by carved pyramid wings and includes a bone saddle along with bone bridge pins.

The abundant cream binding provides a sharp visual contrast against the deep, rich, and glossy Cremona Burst nitrocellulose lacquer finish, ensuring that this uniquely shaped instrument captures as much attention for its beauty as it does for its exquisite 12-fret tone.
