Description
The Explorer made its debut in 1958, and although it was initially met with a lackluster reception, guitarists gradually uncovered its numerous appealing qualities over time. By the 1970s, rock musicians were drawn to its powerful sound and futuristic silhouette, but the model truly hit its stride during the hard-rocking 1980s, when it was picked up by some of the most celebrated players of that generation.
The new Explorer 80s EMG is modeled after the beloved 1984 version, an iconic electric guitar recognized for its massive tones and unique design. Its legendary status is cemented by its association with players like Billy Gibbons, The Edge, and James Hetfield. For those who appreciate a retro-futuristic aesthetic, this instrument serves as a striking tribute to the attitude and edge of the eighties. It boasts a mahogany neck crafted with a fast-playing 60s SlimTaper profile, featuring a rosewood fretboard equipped with 22 medium jumbo frets and understated pearloid dot inlays.
Stability is maintained at the headstock through the use of mini die-cast tuners and a Graph Tech nut. At the other end, the strings traverse an Epiphone LockTone Tune-O-Matic bridge and are secured by a LockTone Stop Bar tailpiece. The classic mahogany body is loaded with active EMG electronics, utilizing an EMG 60 in the neck position and an EMG 81 in the bridge.
These pickups precisely replicate the rich sustain and fat-toned character that defined the sound of the Explorers favored by musicians of that period. They are powered by a 9V battery, housed in a rear-access compartment for convenient, rapid changes. The electronics are managed by individual volume controls paired with a master tone knob, all featuring a knurled metal finish.
With no pickguard to speak of, the Explorer 80s EMG maintains a sleek, slightly menacing aesthetic that honors the edge and attitude of its retro-futuristic roots. The guitar ships in a premium gig bag, prepared to help you rock the world. Please note that a 9-volt battery is required for the pickups but is not included with the instrument.
